Village Partnership Initiative

The Town of Newcastle, in partnership with the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT), has engaged engineers at Wright-Pierce to develop concept plans for re-configuring two central traffic nodes, and connecting vehicle corridors, in the community’s downtown village.

The goal of this pre-engineering project is to envision how Newcastle can better organize and calm traffic flow, support a pedestrian-friendly village district, and add on-street parking to encourage commercial and residential development in the study area, as shown in the Project Vicinity Map. ‘Traffic Node 1’ is the intersection of the U.S. Route 1 off-ramp and River Road (U.S. 1B). ‘Traffic Node 2’ is the intersection of U.S. 1B, Mills Road (State Route 215), and Academy Hill Road.
