History:
Located in Sheepscot Village, the Harriet Gertrude Bird Playground belongs to the people of Newcastle. The clubhouse faces a meadow, part of the rural landscape for which Sheepscot is loved, and offers plenty of outdoor space to host a festival, birthday party, or large family gathering or a place for refreshment after enjoying a ballgame.
Harriet Bird lived nearby, and this location was once her meadow. She is remembered now because a former summer resident, Miss Pauline Fenno, built a children’s playground and clubhouse here before she donated it to the Town of Newcastle in 1975 and named it in honor of Miss Bird. The Town accepted this gift and established that its care and use would be governed by a Town committee.
